Reception for UC Alumni and Friends in the UK and Europe, November 13, 2003
The UC Alumni Associations and the University of California Trust (UK) hosted a reception in London at the English Speaking Union (Dartmouth House) for UC alumni and friends in the UK and Europe. More than 80 guests attended the event to honour Arun Sarin, CEO of the Vodafone GroupPLc, as recipient of the University of California Trust (UK) Award for distinguished achievement by a UC alumnus in the UK. Mr. Sarin, received two degrees from UC Berkeley-a M.S. from the College of Engineering and an M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business. He has actively served on the boards of those schools, serving as a key advisor on a range of strategic issues important to the campus. Mr. Sarin and his wife, Rummi, also a Berkeley alumna, served as board members of International House for nine years, and are also prominent supporters of various other campus departments.

 

Career Revolutions: Building Your Networking Matrix, November 12, 2003

More than 200 UC alumni and guests attended the career networking event in Oakland. Following the reception, AAUC Treasurer and UC Regent-designate Gary Novack introduced keynote speaker Marty Nemko, Ph.D., UC Berkeley alumnus, author, career coach, and columnist and SF Bay Area radio show host. Dr. Nemko discussed the challenges in the current job market and strategies and tools for those seeking jobs or faced with potential job transition. He also moderated a panel of three career professionals who presented the following topics:

•  Grad School: Is it Right for You? Ben Baron, Vice President, Kaplan, and former Assistant Admissions Director, Harvard Business School

Attendees participated in resume critiques and networking with fellow alumni.

Nearly 200 UC alumni attended this event. Following the reception, AAUC President Larry Seigler introduced Michael Dukakis, Governor of Massachusetts (1975-79; 1983-91) and the 1988 Democratic presidential nominee. Mr. Dukakis provided "A Look at the 2004 Presidential Race from a Guy Who Didn't Make It" and spoke about the recall election in California.

Barbara Bodine, originally scheduled to keynote, was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict.

More than 700 alumni from all UC campuses gathered at four events around the state to reconnect with the University and engage in dialogue about University issues with UC President Richard C. Atkinson and Senior Vice President Bruce B. Darling. These events, free to UC alumni, focused on the University's enrollment growth, budget challenges, admissions initiatives, and impact on the California economy, among other topics.



 

 

  Connecting in Dallas
May 7, 2002

Dallas, TX - More than a hundred UC alumni and friends living in Texas joined UC Regent Jeffrey A. Seymour at "Connecting in Dallas." The latest regional event hosted by the Alumni Associations of the University of California (AAUC), the evening kicked off with a networking reception at Studio Movie Grill, giving everybody a chance to reconnect while enjoying hors d' oeuvres and drinks. An exclusive screening of Paramount Pictures' new release Triumph of Love, starring Mira Sorvino and Ben Kingsley, followed the reception. The event's co-sponsors included Publishing Concepts, Grizzard University Team and MBNA Bank. Each year, the AAUC hosts two regional events outside of California to provide UC alumni in other states an opportunity to network and learn more about what's happening at the University of California.
  UC Day, 2002
Over 400 UC alumni and friends attended the UC Day Lunch, honoring UC undergraduate researchers and two California state legislators on March 19, 2002. UC Day in Sacramento is the one time of the year when all nine UC alumni associations come together with their alumni, donors and friends to carry our voice to Sacramento and discuss with their elected representatives issues of concern to the University. It also is the only time when the UC systemwide "family" comes together in one room to acknowledge UC's academic excellence and its contribution to the state.

Connecting with Valley Communities
February 20, 2002
UC Center, Fresno - The evening featured an alumni and friends social hour followed by a free UC admissions and financial aid workshop. Aimed at encouraging students and parents to prepare early for a UC education, the event is part of a larger effort by the university to engage UC alumni in student outreach. By learning the latest admissions requirements and sharing that information with potential students and parents, UC alumni can help ensure that Valley students have access to an affordable, high-quality UC education.

 

Dr. Laura D'Andrea Tyson
February 12th, 2002

London, England - The University of California presented a special evening with Dr. Laura D'Andrea Tyson, former economic advisor to President Clinton and former dean of Berkeley's Haas School of Business, at the prestigious Institute of Directors in London. Hosted by the Alumni Associations of the University of California (AAUC), UC's California House and the Berkeley-in-Britain Alumni Association, the event marked Dr. Tyson's appointment as dean of the London Business School. Over 150 international alumni, corporate leaders and other friends of the university joined to honor Tyson's contributions to the UC community.

Tyson's address her time serving as President Clinton's senior-most economic official - as National Economic Advisor to the President and as chairman of the National Economic Council chair and the White House Council of Economic Advisors. Through the prism of her experiences in the first Clinton administration in shaping international trade policies, she addressed current global upheavals and their implications for the world economy - which included a report back from her attendance at the most recent meeting of the World Economic Forum. She also touched on her tenure at the Haas Business School during the tumultuous growth in California's high-tech, entrepreneurial economy over the past few years. Dr. Tyson. 4th Annual Fall Banquet
November 30, 2001
The San Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network hosted a dinner on November 30, 2001, at Aviation Challenge in Atwater. UC Merced Chancellor Carol Tomlinson Tomlinson-Keasey was the featured speaker at the banquet, co-sponsored by the Alumni Associations of the University of California. State Senator Jim Costa was honored for his efforts on behalf of the University of California in the San Joaquin Valley. Also honored were UC Alumni of the Year Susan Walsh and Hub Walsh.
 

"Partnering for Progress:
An All-UC Mixer with the Mayor"
September 20
UC alumni in the Fresno area had the opportunity to meet Fresno Mayor Alan Autry and Assembly Member Sarah Reyes as well as reconnect with the University of California and network with fellow UC alumni. Both the Mayor and the Assembly Member expressed a great deal of excitement that the University of California will soon extend its reach to students in the valley when classes begin at UC Merced. The well-attended event was co-sponsored by the San Joaquin Valley UC Alumni Network and the Alumni Associations of the University of California.

 

"Prospering with Change"
September 8, 2001
Approximately 300 UC alumni and friends attended the one-day career conference held in San Francisco on September 8. Alumni had the opportunity to take morning and afternoon workshops as well as hear from keynote speakers.

Spencer House Reception
June 26, 2001

One of California House’s benefits is the opportunity to connect UC’s international alumni and friends with each other nearly 3,000 UC alumni in Britain and other parts of Europe and with UK academic, industrial and governmental communities. As part of this international outreach effort, the Alumni Associations of the University of California (AAUC) and the University of California Trust (UK) hosted a special event for alumni and friends of the University on June 26 at Spencer House in London. Roddy Gow of the British-American Business Inc. spoke on British-California relations. The first University of California Trust (UK) Award for contributions to Anglo-California academic excellence was given to Professor John Heilbron, Senior Fellow at Oxford University.

 

Washington DC Reception,
May 23, 2001

Hundreds of UC alumni joined the UC campuses' vice chancellors for both university relations and research, systemwide Senior Vice President Bruce Darling and Federal Governmental Relations Assistant Vice President Scott Sudduth at the May 23rd evening reception held at the Rayburn House Office Building. California legislators attending the all-UC event included Congresswoman Lois Capps (Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo counties, 22nd District) and Congressman Sam Farr (Monterey Bay, 17th District). Student interns and staffers from California's Congressional delegation also mixed with UC alumni and DC luminaries. The event was sponsored by the Alumni Associations of the University of California.
